Shikari is a crime drama set in the colonial India of the 1870s, during British rule. It portrays a man from an Indian village who becomes an assassin for the British forces there. Obviously, this isn't your everyday Bollywood blockbuster, but it wasn't designed to be one. In fact, this movie would have been impossible to watch without subtitles since it was shot in Hindi with no English dialogue or score. There were some attempts at dubbing into English and Spanish respectively though. The movie also takes its name from the special forces of India's army. Shikari was shot over a three-year period and it was one of the first Bollywood movies to be shot on video (in this case, Hi8). The movie's title itself is a slang term used in Gujarati for an assassin or criminals. The film is based on real life stories of local insurrectionists like Dhanji, who fought against the British Raj in Gujarati service. That such disciplined fighters as Dhanji were ready to resort to acts of violence and murder became a theme in Shikari. The movie was directed by Ram Gopal Varma, who previously directed films "Gruesome" and Madhushala. Ram Gopal Varma had collaborated with the producer of the film, A. M. Rathnam on three films before this one: Madhushala(1998), Mod(1999) and Nokku Dikkulu Chuvsti (1996). Shikari was met with mixed reactions from critics. The major criticisms were directed towards the acting of its lead actors, which ranged from Ravi Kissen's character being too Americanised to his exaggerated dance steps. The music of the film was composed by Rajat Dholakia. The lyrics were penned by Aatish Kapadia, Nitin Raikwar and Mangesh Padgaonkar.The movie had a low-key release and received little support from theatre owners. However, despite this it did well commercially, grossing more than $38 million against a budget of $4 million. This is due to the fact that Shikari had a limited release, only in the US and Canada and some parts of Europe and Asia (like India). It was undoubtedly the first Bollywood film to be released on direct-to-video in the United States. The movie started with a very good opening, with 100,000 units of the DVD being sold in two weeks. The film was noted for its excellent video transfer and DVD extra features. It won 'Best DVD' awards in both Mid Day and Times of India newspapers.
